Ed Harris, Jim Sturgess, and Peter Weir in 'The Way Back' (Wrekin Hill Entertainment/Newmarket Films)

Director Peter Weir’s adventurous spirit is evident in most of his films.  Whether it’s surviving a plane crash (Fearless), exploring an Amish community (Witness), having the world watch your every move (The Truman Show), or traveling the high seas (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), Weir’s protagonists usually face a monumental and life altering challenge.  With the new film The Way Back, we follow the lives of several prisoners (which inclue Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, and Colin Farrell) who escape a Siberian gulag in 1940 and travel thousands of miles towards freedom, with just three of them making it to India.  Having been a lifelong fan of Weir’s films, I asked the director if there is a thematic motif that runs throughout most of his films.  CLICK on the media and listen to Peter Weir’s response, as he also talks about his own personal journeys as a youth.
