Biutiful, the story of a Barcelona street criminal named Uxbal (Javier Bardem) who learns he is dying of cancer, is not exactly the feel good movie of the year. Written and directed by Babel filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, the story is a somber yet ultimately resonant look on life and death, themes that may turn off viewers who simply want something to watch with their popcorn. “I know (what the audience) are going through when they watch this movie,” said Bardem. “Because I’ve been in premieres and seen peoples’ faces..what they have is a journey, an emotional journey. They make a journey with us. It’s not a movie where you go, ‘I like it or I didn’t like it.’ It’s something more than that. I know that is the strength of the movie.” Throughout his career, Bardem has collaborated with some of today’s finest filmmakers (Alejandro Amenabar, the Coens, Woody Allen) - Click on the media bar and listen to Javier Bardem give us his definition of an “actor’s director.”
