Derek Cianfrance, director of "Blue Valentine" (The Weinstein Company)
Although Derek Cianfrance cites John Cassavetes, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Harmony Korine as filmmakers who have influenced him as an artist, Cianfrance drew most of his inspiration from reality in crafting Blue Valentine. “My first film Brother Tied, which no one ever saw, was too much inspired only by movies,” said Cianfrance, who made Brother Tied when he was just 23. “It was too referential in a way to other movies. Twelve years ago I wasn’t married, I didn’t have kids. Now I do. That really will change your life and make you refocus and humble your life to something greater. This movie is a very humble movie. It’s trying to capture life and not capture movies.” Blue Valentine, an intimate and evocative film about a bittersweet relationship, has garnered Golden Globe and BFCA nods for its lead actors, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.
