Fourteen-year-old Hailee Steinfeld star making turn as Mattie Ross, a youth determined to bring justice to her father’s killer (Josh Brolin) in True Grit, has earned her a BFCA and a SAG nomination. Steinfeld, who beat out an estimated 15,000 other young ladies for the coveted part, was not afraid to do some of her own stunts in the Coen Brothers directed Western. “I did most of them,” said Steinfeld, who was raised in Thousand Oaks, Ca. “The falling down in the snake pit, that was the biggest stunt. I learned to shoot a gun right before I went on location. That was one of the things that I wanted to make sure I had a clue of what I was doing. So my dad took me to a shooting range with a friend of ours who is an LAPD officer. He kind of told me everything I really needed to know.” Seemingly wise beyond her years, the teenager was not too intimidated by all the heavy-hitters (Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin) on the set. “I feel like all of them are like big kids so it was a lot of fun,” added the actress.
