Sofia Coppola was living in Paris while she penned the screenplay to her latest film, Somewhere. The story deals with A-list actor Johnny Marco, whose aimless days and nights are usually spent at the Chateau Marmont hotel on Sunset Boulevard. “Stephen Dorff just came to mind when I was thinking of this character,” said Coppola, who met with Dorff in the City of Lights to discuss the project. “I knew him a little over the years. We never spent a lot of time together or were real close, but I knew he was a sweet guy. I felt like this character was so flawed and could easily be so unlikable that you needed someone with a lot of heart and someone sweet for that to come through and for the audience to connect to him. And I think he’s a great actor and we haven’t seen that side to him.” Coppola, who first gained notice for her work in her dad’s film The Godfather Part III, cites filmmakers Jean-Luc Godard and Stanley Kubrick as early creative influences.
