It’s been four years since Babel, but director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu is back with the drama Biutiful, a Barcelona set story about a street criminal and father named Uxbal (Javier Bardem) who is dying from cancer.  Inarritu’s inspiration for Biutiful originated from his appreciation of the Ravel Piano Concerto in G Major, and over the next several years he (along with co-writer Armando Bo) crafted the painstaking and spiritual journey of Uxbal.  “The musicality is such an important thing,” said Inarritu, who also directed 21 Grams and Amores Perros.  “If you find that, sometimes even scenes that are not very good they can still survive because they maintain the pulse of the whole thing.  So for me if I don’t have that, I will not know how to direct a film.  Music is an incredibly good reference to a start film and to know what I’m dealing with.”  As far as dealing with the awards season, Inarritu is less complimentary, as he likens the experience to being in a “flea market.”  Click on the media bar and listen to the filmmaker give his thoughts on the “ridiculous” awards season (Biutiful has received a BFCA and Golden Globe nod for Best Foreign Film).
