I love to be surprised,” says Oscar winning actress Helen Mirren. “I never imagined The Tempest would happen and it did.  It was a miracle for me.  It’s just what is unexpected, it’s what’s going to come and surprise me, that’s kind of all I want in life, in general actually.”  During this year, Mirren starred in her husband Taylor Hackford’s film Love Ranch, played a retired agent in the Bruce Willis headlined project Red, and her latest film The Tempest opens Friday.  Directed by Julie Taymor (Titus), The Tempest features Mirren as the sorceress Prospera, a woman bent on seeking revenge on her brother Antonio (The Town’s Chris Cooper).  “In my career as I got older, journalists were and are still always asking me to kind of complain about the opportunities of older women on screen,” said the 65-year-old while accepting the Hollywood Reporter’s Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the annual Women in Entertainment breakfast.  “And I certainly could complain about that.  I’ve seen too many of my brilliant colleagues who work non-stop through their twenties, their thirties, and their forties, and only to find a complete desert in their fifties.”  (Click on the Media Bar and listen to Helen Mirren talk about the challenges of doing The Tempest, as she admits she is “terrified of learning lines”)
