Actress Lesley Manville gives one of this year’s finest performances in Another Year, playing Mary, a lonely woman who relies on the friendship and company of a happily married London couple (Jim Broadbent, Ruth Sheen). Directed by Mike Leigh (Happy Go Lucky, Naked), the picture is set during four seasons in one year, as viewers witness Mary’s growing desperation to connect with anyone who will notice her. For her inspired work, Manville was named Best Actress by the National Board of Review and Another Year was named one of the year’s top films (Best Film went to The Social Network). “I think the film is a very lovely film about the difficulties of just living and trying to have a life and have some compatibility and warmth and love in your life and how hard those seemingly simple things are to achieve,” said Manville. “We’re all wanting to achieve that in our lives.” This writer interviewed Manville several weeks ago in Los Angeles and asked her if the awards buzz surrounding Another Year has made an impact on her acting career.
