Although Love And Other Drugs is receiving its share of lukewarm reviews, actress Anne Hathaway has received strong notices for her role as Maggie Murdock, a woman in the early stages of Parkinson’s Disease who falls in love with a pharmaceutical salesman (Jake Gyllenhaal). “I was a little nervous because I had gone to support groups for Rachel Getting Married, but this one felt a bit different,” said Hathaway, who talked about the extensive research she did for the part. “I talked openly that like many people I’ve had experiences with addiction in my life but I’ve never known anyone who had Parkinson’s Disease. I was really coming at it with total ignorance, and I was anticipating a bit of resistance from people in the support groups. But I was met with absolute openness and warmth. People wanted to share their stories because Parkinson’s is a very insidious disease. It doesn’t get a lot of attention. Everyone sat there and said `thank God for Michael J. Fox because I don’t think anyone would know anything without his advocacy.’ They shared their fears with me and they shared their anxieties. And they shared their triumphs.” Click on the media bar and listen to Hathaway discuss Maggie Murdock’s struggles with stage one early on-set Parkinson’s Disease (Hathaway mentions director Edward Zwick in the clip).
