Tim Roth wouldn’t win any awards for Father of the Year if he were really as overbearing as his character, Dr. Cal Lightman on Lie to Me.

However, Hayley McFarland, who stars as his daughter Emily on the series, says Roth is not near as gruff as what we see on TV.

“That would be a pretty frustrating parent to have,” McFarland acknowledges. “[Roth] very good for setting a tone for the scene. We get along really well. I kind of think he thinks I’m his actual daughter. It makes for a really good day. I like those days when Tim and I have scenes all day. It’s really fun. We can goof around all day and we just really have a good time.”

And the father-daughter challenges are going to increase now Emily has begun dating, McFarland says.

“Emily is 17 now so she’s definitely getting more adamant about setting boundaries. She doesn’t hold back information. She doesn’t do things like, ‘I didn’t tell you about this because I thought I’d get in trouble, but because I need to have my own life and my own secrets and somethings I just don’t want you to know,’ ” she points out.

And count on Emily’s new boyfriend to hang around, too.
“I think he might stick around a while.”

Which means, Dr. Lightman will have plenty of opportunities to mix it up with him in the future.
McFarland has leaned a lot about reading body language and lying from working on the series, but would rather not become an expert on lie detection like the employees at The Lightman Group.

“I’ve learned a couple of things, but I don’t think I would want to know everything. I think sometimes I’m just better off not knowing the truth,” she laughs.

That’s probably better for most people.
Lie to Me airs Mondays, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
