Megamind put a mind-meld on audiences to take the number one position at the box office. The animated movie, which features the vocal talents of Will Farrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey pulled in an estimated $47.6 million in its debut to become the superheroes of the weekend.
The buddy road flick, Due Date, starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Zach Galifianakis grabbed $33.5 mil and second place between Friday and Sunday. That’s good news for Warner Bros. Most films debuting recently have been hovering at around the $20 million marker, with the exception of gross-out and bone-breaker pic Jackass 3D with $50 mil as well as the majority of animated films including Toy Story 3 with a whopping $110 mil in its first weekend out.
The question of whether or not Tyler Perry, who has made a fortune for studios with his gender-bender comedies like Madea’s Family Reunion, could pull off a win with a more traditional feature was answered with a rousing yes. For Colored Girls grossed an estimated $20.1 million over the last three days and landed in third place. The movie has also nearly recouped its production budget of $20 million in its debut.
Red is still bringing in the cash. The actioner, starring Bruce Willis and Oscar winners Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman was the number four movie this weekend with an estimated $8.8 million. This is Red’s fourth week out and the pic has amassed $71.8 million to date, pushing it well past its cost of $58 mil.
Saw 3D brought in an additional $8.2, which brings its full tally to an estimated $38.8 mil. The movie had already made back its budget of $20 mil, which means that this additional revenue, as well as any future box office dough, is simply overkill from this point on.
Rounding out the top 10:
6. Paranormal Activity 2 $7.2 million
7. Jackass 3D $5.0 million
8. Hereafter $4,020. million
9. Secretariat $4.002 million
10. The Social Network $3.6 million
