"Secretariat" Director Randall Wallace
Secretariat filmmaker Randall Wallace, who first gained recognition for his Braveheart screenplay, is known for directing movies (The Man in the Iron Mask, We Were Soldiers) which feature characters who live with a sense of integrity and passion. Penny Chenery (played by Diane Lane), the owner of Triple Crown winner Secretariat, is a woman who fits into that mold, as she stepped into a male dominated sport and through sheer will and determination rose to the top of the horse racing world. As for Wallace, he learned his biggest showbiz lesson from his dad. “My father was a traveling salesman and really successful at it in fact, and I think the greatest whoever lived at it because he loved people,” said the director. “And he said to me, `People will remember almost nothing of what you say and just a little more of what you do but all their lives they will remember the way you made them feel and that to me is the key to what movies are all about.” For more on Wallace’s rather inspiring advice on filmmaking, click on the media bar (Secretariat, which should garner Diane Lane another Oscar nomination, opens nationwide Friday).
