Paul and Mira Sorvino Launch Diabetes Awareness Program (DiabetesCoStars.com)

Actor Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas) and his daughter, Oscar winning actress Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) have helped launch a diabetes awareness program with sanofi-aventis aimed to help individuals living with diabetes and the friends and family who support them.  Paul Sorvino was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2006, and a rather scary incident involving the actor led hiim and his daughter to take positive steps towards dealing with diabetes.  “When I was giving birth to my son Holden 15 months ago, dad had me over to his apartment  for a delicious plate of pasta fazool, which is a traditional Neapolitan bean dish that we all love,” recalled Mira Sorvino. “And dad had a big helping himself and then promptly sort of slumped forward in his chair and turned a strange color of kind of purple gray and I didn’t know what was happening to him and he looked very odd and was kind of very unresponsive and then all of a sudden he said `I think I have to go and lie down’ and he disappeared into his room.  I stood vigil outside the door saying `Dad do you need me to call the doctor, 911, what’s going on’ and then finally he said `I think it was the diabetes I’ve taken some medication I’m starting to feel a little better.’  That was a real wake up call for me because I realized I knew nothing about diabetes, I knew nothing about how to help him what was going on and I realized later it was an incident of extreme high blood sugar caused by eating all that pasta and all those high carbs but I realized I needed to help my dad, I needed to be a sort of a help mate for him to stick on the straight and narrow path of his doctor’s orders, a better diet plan, and an exercise plan.” The Sorvinos are hoping people check out the DiabetesCoStars.com website to learn more about diabetes and the site offers guidance on healthy cooking choices and physical activities for people living with diabetes.  Mira Sorvino says her dad is living a lot healthier these days, and click on the media bar and listen to the actress talk about her courageous father (Paul Sorvino can also be heard in the clip).
