Online film geeks salivated over the Zack Snyder hiring for the Superman reboot, but I’m not a huge Watchmen fan (loved the graphic novel though) and won’t rush out see his new owl film either. My mind is set on True Grit, the Coen Brothers’ adaptation of the Charles Portis novel of the same name. Western fans remember the 1969 film with John Wayne as the gruff U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn and Glen Campbell playing his sidekick, Texas Ranger La Boeuf. Kim Darby starred as Mattie Ross, the teenager who hired Cogburn to hunt down the man who killed her father. This time out, Jeff Bridges has the enviable role of taking on one of Wayne’s most iconic parts, with Matt Damon and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld rounding out the trio. Josh Brolin, who worked with the Coens on their Oscar winning film No Country For Old Men, is also on hand to play the killer, Tom Chaney. The theatrical trailer looks absolutely fantastic, and using the Johnny Cash tune “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” doesn’t hurt its cause either. Will True Grit rank right up there with the Coens’ best work (No Country For Old Men, Fargo, The Man Who Wasn’t There)? My bet is it puts a whipping to Jonah Hex (sorry Mr. Brolin) and could top director James Mangold’s spirited Western 3:10 To Yuma. During his Crazy Heart interviews Jeff Bridges said the latest True Grit is a bit more faithful to the Charles Portis book. Also of note: John Wayne won an Oscar for the role, which possibly puts Jeff Bridges in the running for a second year in a row. “If I’d known that I’d have put that patch on 35 years earlier,” said Wayne during his Oscar acceptance speech. Check out the theatrical trailer for True Grit, which opens nationwide Christmas Day.
