Deadline.com reports Tony Gilroy, the screenwriter behind the first three Jason Bourne films, will direct The Bourne Legacy. Paul Greengrass, director of the second and third films, left the franchise after Universal started developing the film while he and Matt Damon were working on Green Zone. Damon stated that he would not return to the Bourne films if Greengrass was not directing. Gilroy, however, is also a proven (and first-rate) director, as evinced from his films Michael Clayton and Duplicity. Although Damon has Hereafter and True Grit in the bag, the Bourne films are his bread and butter, and Gilroy is an excellent choice as Greengrass’ replacement (I would have picked Gilroy over Zack Snyder in the Superman reboot, but that’s another story!!). If Damon ditches the franchise, Universal will continue with the project, according to Deadline.com. Even though he played an assassin in The Bourne Identity, Clive Owen could be a suitable choice as Jason Bourne (just speculating!!), and he also worked with Gilroy on Duplicity. Don’t be surprised if Damon goes back on his word and returns to Bourne now that Gilroy is the man behind the camera.
