Martha Plimpton isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of series television, but that didn’t stop her from joining the cast as Virginia, the hilarious mom on Raising Hope whose son returns home and brings his new baby girl with him to raise…sort of.
Though she’s done her share of guest appearances and recurring roles on TV, Plimpton is a fixture on both the stage and in film projects like The Goonies, Parenthood and I’m Not Rappaport.
So far, the series experience has been great for the actress, particularly because her co-stars are so easy to work with – even Cloris Leachman, who stars as crazy grandma Maw Maw.
“She’s out of her mind, is what she is,” Plimpton offeres up about Leachman. “But in the best of ways.”

The biggest adjustment Plimpton has made since signing onto Raising Hope is in the schedule for her workday, which begins at dawn – the complete opposite of the theater.
“That’s kind of rough,” she begins, “because I’m not a morning person, but I’m really loving it.”

Plimpton knows that if Raising Hope is a success, she’ll be in the public eye on a much larger scale, but she’s convinced it won’t change her life simply because she’s not looking for fame. As far as the actress is concerned keeping a low profile is easy if that’s what you want.
“People whose lives change, if it changes their lives that much, they probably want it to,” Plimpton points out.

Raising Hope airs Tuesdays, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
