Resident Evil: Afterlife, based on the gruesome zombie videogame of the same name, attracted a $27.7 million worth of moviegoers over the weekend and took in the top spot at the box office.

It wasn’t quite as profitable for the other flicks, but many of the new entries were in a limited amount of theaters. Still, it seems that filmgoers were more interested in other activities than hanging in theaters.

Takers took second place in its third week in theaters. Though the film dropped off 43-percent from its second week, it still grabbed $6.1 mil.

The George Clooney movie, The American, which was number one its first week out, dropped 55.3 percent and landed in third place with $5.8 million additional revenue.

Robert Rodriguez’s cult picture, Machete is in fourth place with $4.2 mil. Machete came in just shy of the George Clooney’s pic last week and followed suit again this round. It too dropped off in audience appeal – a whopping 63.2 percent.

The Drew Barrymore/Justin Long romantic comedy, Going the Distance rounds out the top five with $3.8 million. Going the Distance was also landed at number five last week for its debut, but the pic still saw a decline of 44.3 percent.

Rounding out the top 10:

6. The Other Guys $3.6 million

7. The Last Exorcism $3.4 million

8. The Expendables $3.2 million

9. Inception $3 million

10. Eat Pray Love $2.9 million
