It was Leo vs. Angelina at the box office this weekend and apparently more folks were interested in having their dreams invaded than a spy thriller.
Inception, for the second week in a row, took the top spot with moviegoers adding an additional $43.5 million to its growing revenue take. That brings the Leonardo DiCaprio pic up to an estimated total of $143.6 mil, which is just shy of its $160 mil budget.
Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, grabbed an impressive $36.5 million in its debut outing and landed in second place. While Despicable Me, in third place, brought in an additional $24.1 million bringing its estimated total to $161.7 million in its third week in theaters. The budget was $69 mil, which means the animated flick is inching close to tripling its box office take.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice dropped off 45-percent from its debut last week and took the fourth place position. The movie only raised an estimated $9.6 million between Friday and Sunday. This is a $150 million pic that has only brought in an estimated $42.6 mil so far. Still, it’s early in the game, but the film is in a sizable amount of theaters – 3,504 to be exact. Not a stunning result for such a wide release.
In fifth place, Toy Story 3. The animated sequel continues to bring in an audience six weeks later with $9 mil in additional revenue. Here’s the thing, Toy Story 3 cost $200 million to produce and it has nabbed an estimated $379.5 million to date, which moves it closer to being the official biggest hit of the summer.
Rounding out the top 10:
6. Ramona and Beezus $8 million
7. Grown Ups $7.6 million
8. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse $7 million
9. The Last Airbender $4.1 million
10. Predators $2.8 million
