Shrek Forever After came out on top at the box office over the holiday weekend. The fourth sequel in the animated franchise saw $55.7 million between Friday and Monday and only dropped 21.3 percent since its debut on May 21st.
Though Sex and the City 2 looked like it would take second place as late as Sunday, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time squeaked past it with an estimated total of $37.8 million compared to Sex’s $37.1 mil in receipts.
Iron Man 2 landed in fourth position in its fourth week out nabbing $20.6 million and – like Shrek Forever After - dropped a mere 21.9 percent since its debut. Iron Man 2 has grossed $279 million, which puts the flick well over its $200 million budget.
The Russell Crowe action adventure, Robin Hood dropped to fifth place in its third week out with a disappointing $13.6 million in revenue. That brings the total domestic receipts to $86.3 million – still far short of the $200 million production costs.
Rounding out the top 10:
6. Letters to Juliet $7.2 million
7. Just Wright $2.7 million
8. Date Night $2.2 million
9. MacGruber $1.9 million
10. How to Train Your Dragon $1.4 million
