It’s been a week since O’Neal Hampton asked to be eliminated from The Biggest Loser. Hampton was out to save his daughter Sunshine Hampton from getting the boot – a decision he’s still content with after all is said and done.
Hampton tells HollywoodOutbreak.com that his life experience will get him through, but his baby girl needs more support.
“I’m a father before I’m a competitor and that’s exactly how I wanted it to be throughout the whole process,” he begins. “I’m willing to go out there and continue my life’s journey outside of the ranch. I wanted her to get every single thing humanly possible from there when she leaves to make her sustain her success for the long-term.”
Hampton has lost nearly 150 pounds since his Biggest Loser adventure began. He won’t say how close he is to his goal, but he’s confident he’ll do well in time for the finale. And he succeeded despite a bum knee (sustained in the military) – as well as a dozen different meds he downed daily (which he no longer needs due to dropping the pounds).
Now he’s exercising and eating right and even buying organic, which Hampton claims is more cost effective in the long run.
“People say that organic food and healthy food is so much more expensive,” he acknowledges adding, “Not for me. The tradeoff was what I was spending in co-payments going to the doctor and then my medication for the 12 pills that I was taking a day I’m now spending in food, which is a lot cheaper than medicine.”
He’s doing great and has no intention of slowing his momentum. But, in the beginning he had his doubts if he’d survive – and even admits the trainers, Jillian Michaels and Bob Harper, pushed him to the limit physically…and mentally.
“I’m human too. Has my patience every gotten short? Yes it has. But, I try to figure out why it’s getting short,” he explains. “The thing you’ve got to know is it’s not the person who’s trying to get you to be better. Like one time I said, ‘Jillian, I’ve got to throw up.’ She said, ‘Throw up in your mouth then and swallow it.’ You hear those things you get mad. What she’s trying to get you to do is change behavior. Sometimes you’ve got to be cruel to be kind.”
The follow up to that line, of course, is “in the right measure.” And it’s hardly believable that being told to swallow puke is helpful in anyway. But, for Hampton, it worked wonders.
Now, he’s counting on his daughter to win big by getting smaller.
“I got every faith and confidence. Sunshine’s doing very well and I know she’ll continue it.”
The Biggest Loser continues tonight, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
