Dixie Carter, who is best known for her starring role as Julia Sugarbaker in the TV series Designing Women has died.

Carter’s publicist, Steve Rohr, told the Associated Press that the actress died Saturday morning.

She began her career on the stage and was a skilled opera singer, musician and dancer. However, it was Designing Women that brought her the most fame. She continued working regularly and even received an Emmy nomination for her seven-episode guest stint on the top-rated dramedy, Desperate Housewives in 2007.

The actress was married to actor Hal Holbrook from 1984 up until her death at the age of 70 years old.
