After 16 seasons S. Epatha Merkerson who plays Lt. Anita Van Buren is rumored to be leaving the iconic television cop/court drama Law & Order.
Merkerson joined Law & Order back in 1993. She replaced Dann Florek because, at the time, producers thought the show needed more female characters. Merkerson has been on over 300 episodes.
Over the past 20 years Lt. Anita Van Buren has had great storylines. For instance, she was robbed at an ATM and had to kill the robber to protect herself in front of her children. Other memorable storylines included Van Buren being passed up on a promotion because she was a woman, and this season Merkerson’s character has been stricken with cancer and yet continues to work while dealing with her illness.
Merkerson has seen numerous actors come and go on the show including Steven Hill, Benjamin Bratt, Chris Noth, Michael Moriarty, and Jerry Orbach. While Law & Order has proved that the show can go on even with key members of the cast departing, her possible departure will be felt and missed.
