Peter Graves, who is best known for his roles in the TV series Mission Impossible and the disaster movie send-up, Airplane, has died.

According to the AP, Graves died Sunday shortly after returning to his Los Angeles home from a brunch with his family.

He played James Phelps in Mission Impossible, leader of an elite group of covert operatives fighting evil. Who can forget that memorable line, “Good morning, Mr. Phelps?”

In Airplane he starred as Captain Clarence Oveur, the pilot with a penchant for young boys.

Graves gave a standout performance in the Billy Wilder classic, Stalag 17, playing an undercover Nazi in a prison camp filled with American soldiers.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Joan Endress, his three daughters, Kelly, Claudia and actress Amanda Graves as well as his big brother, James Arness, of Gunsmoke fame.

Peter Graves was 83 years old. He would have been 84 this coming Thursday.
