Shuttler Island last weekend’s #1 box office film, making it the biggest opening in director Martin Scorsese’s career (one can assume its box-office receipts far surpassed Kundun or After Hours). The revered filmmaker, however, usually doesn’t do films just to fill a studio’s coffers, as he has always followed his own creative compass. Shutter Island is Scorsese’s homage to the claustrophobic thrillers of yesteryear, and he cites filmmaker Val Lewton as a huge influence for making the film.
