It was another weekend of firsts at the box office. Actually it was more of a personal best for Actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Director Martin Scorsese. Their flick Shutter Island raked in $40-plus million in box-office receipts and was number one choice for moviegoers. There was much speculation about the film’s success after the studio, Paramount Pictures, delayed the release of the flick from August to now, but apparently audiences didn’t get the memo and showed up in numbers for the movie, which is set in a prison hospital for the criminally insane. DiCaprio’s biggest opening previously…Catch Me if You Can with $30 mil. Scorsese’s prior best…The Departed with $27 mil.
Valentine’s Day was still the date movie of choice this weekend. The romantic-comedy grossed $17.1 mil and took the number two slot.
Ten weeks later, Avatar not only held its own, but actually improve its position. The sci-fi epic regained momentum and moved from fourth place to a strong third with $16.1 mil.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightening Thief hung in there in fourth place with $15.3 million.
And The Wolfman dropped down, but still rounded out the top tier of films in fifth place with $9.8 million.
Completing the top 10:
Dear John $7.3 mil
The Tooth Fairy $4.5 mil
Crazy Heart $3.0 mil
From Paris with Love $2.5 mil
Edge of Darkness $2.2 mil
