the_outlaw_posterOn this day in 1943, HOWARD HUGHES’ western, THE OUTLAW, finally hit the big screen after a very controversial production. HUGHES didn’t make it a secret that he was looking for a leading lady with *ahem* a balcony you could do Shakespeare off of. He found her in JANE RUSSELL and immediately leaked the news that his aircraft engineers had designed a special bra to enhance her *um* presence.

THE OUTLAW was one of the first American films to spit in the eye of The Production Code and should be saluted for that (if nothing else).
