Pandora was a great destination for moviegoers again this weekend! Avatar held onto the top position at the box office for the seventh week in a row, grabbing another $30 million in revenue. Avatar has already become the top-grossing film worldwide, but the James Cameron sci-fi epic is nearing the domestic box office record as well with an estimated $594.5 million to date. The leader in domestic box office is Cameron’s 1998 epic Titanic with $600.8 million. Avatar is poised to reach - or even surpass that number.
Mel Gibson’s flick, Edge of Darkness brought in $17.1 million. Many questioned whether or not Gibson could still entice an audience, and while the film paled in comparison to Avatar, it still had respectable numbers. When in Rome was in third place with a $12.1 million take.
The rest of the top 10 is as follows: The Tooth Fairy in fouth position with $10.0 million, fifth place was The Book of Eli with $ 8.8 million, Legion in sixth place nabbed $ 6.8 million, The Lovely Bones is in seventh place with $ 4.7 million, Sherlock Holmes is still going strong at number eight with $ 4.5 million, while Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel easily grabbed an additional $ 4.0 million and the ninth position, the Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin romantic-comedy, It’s Complicated rounded out the top 10 coming in 10th with $ 3.7 million.
