What a guy Stephen J. Cannell is. He has produced many of the most memorable TV series from Rockford Files and 21 Jump Street to Hunter and The A-Team. As for the talent in those shows, well, how about Johnny Depp, Mr. T and James Garner for starters.
The famed producer has remained close with his actors throughout the years, no matter how careers have soared and he makes time to meet with them regularly.
And boy does Cannell have a keen eye for star power, though he claims it’s a crapshoot who will and who won’t connect with viewers. Still, Johnny Depp is a perfect example of someone on fire from the start.
Right now, big screen adaptations of his television series are in the works. The A-Team is done shooting, The Rockford Files is being given the once over by House creator, David Shore and funnyman Steve Carell and Superbad star, Jonah Hill is writing the screenplay to 21 Jump Street, which Cannell promises will have the same type of stories, but with a satirical spin.
And for all his creativity, Cannell easily turns over the reigns to other producers and writers. Still, for purists, the original 21 Jump Street starring Johnny Depp, Hunter with Fred Dryer in the lead and the Lorenzo Lamas series Renegade have all just been released on DVD.
