jazzOn this day in 1953, WARNER BROTHERS PICTURES released THE JAZZ SINGER in New York City. Directed by MICHAEL CURTIZ from the short story by SAMSON RAPHAELSON, this remade tale of a Jewish Cantor’s son with show-biz aspirations was made famous as the first “talkie” starring AL JOLSON. This time around, it was popular nightclub performer DANNY THOMAS taking the lead with an able assist from recording star PEGGY LEE. Also in the cast are EDWARD FRANZ, MILDRED DUNNOCK, ALEX GERRY and ALLYN JOSLYN. Unfortunately, aside from a few swell tunes, there isn’t much to see here.
