On this day in 1966, UNIVERSAL PICTURES released GAMBIT. Directed by RONALD NEAME from a screenplay by ALVIN SARGENT and JACK DAVIES, this attempt to combine the ‘caper’ genre with a romantic comedy was mostly successful and featured the brilliant teaming of MICHAEL CAINE and SHIRLEY MacLAINE. And while it isn’t the best of the comedy caper movies, it does work on a ‘popcorn’ level. gambit
