Hope, born Leslie Townes Hope in London, made his film debut three years later in The Big Broadcast of 1938, singing “Thanks for the Memory.” Later, he appeared in a series of hit movies: the “Road to…” features with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. He received five special Academy Awards for his efforts entertaining the military during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
