Sherlock Holmes is not the Sherlock Holmes you’ve either read in books or seen in previous films. This version stars Robert Downey, Jr. in the signature role and Jude Law and his faithful friend and drug supplier, Dr. Watson. In this adaptation, the super-sleuth is chasing his nemesis, Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), who somehow manages to return from the grave to continue on a killing spree. The chase to recapture Blackwood leads to murder, deceit and even black magic for the legendary detective.

For purists, this more physical adaptation of Sherlock Holmes is probably going to be tough to swallow. However, if action-adventures are your thing and you can let go of any notions or familiar expectations, it might be a satisfying escapade.

It’s Complicated stars Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin as divorce couple Jane and Jake. She’s still single, but he’s now married to his much younger, former mistress, Agnes (Lake Bell). When Jane begins to hookup with her architect, Adam (Steve Martin), Jake begins an all-out mission to reclaim Jane’s heart.

It’s Complicated is the latest romantic-comedy from Nancy Meyers (Something’s Gotta Give) about the emotional ups and down from adults…well…not in their 20s or 30s or even 40s. And this is one of her better films, but like most of her features, It’s Complicated often becomes silly, sappy and predictable. Nice work from the lead actors, though, who all seem to sink their teeth into the characters without a hint of hesitation.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel brings the Chimunks back for another singing adventure. But now they’re not only dealing with the pressures of celebrity and school, but with a rival girl group known as the Chipettes. If you enjoyed the Alvin and the Chipmunks from 2007, it’s a safe bet you’ll have fun watching the Squeakquel.

Deal making with the devil can be Hell. Just as Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) who has been doing it for centuries in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. However, when his daughter’s soul is near up for grabs (on her 16th birthday), Parnassus is Hell-bent on preventing Satan from collecting. Like most of Terry Gilliam’s features (The Adventures of Baron Munchausen/Brazil/Time Bandits), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is an overload of visuals. The movie features Heath Ledger, who did not finish his role in the film because of his untimely death on January 22nd, 2008. What Gilliam did to compensate was smart and makes perfect sense thanks to the fanciful script. Gilliam fans are going to love his return to the outrageous films he’s famous for.
