Clint Eastwood admits he knew very little about former South African President Nelson Mandela before he began production on his epic film, Invictus.

 The filmmaker was aware of the history, just not how Mandela united South Africa by way of sports – specifically the rugby team – and that was a story Eastwood knew the movie-going audience would respond to.
