On this day in 1969, 20TH CENTURY FOX released HELLO, DOLLY!. Directed by GENE KELLY, this big-screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical of the same name was a textbook study in what NOT to do in bringing Broadway to the movies. BARBRA STREISAND was horribly miscast in the titular role opposite a decades older WALTER MATTHAU, with whom she had no chemistry whatsoever (many accounts have them actually hating each other). That said, the JERRY HERMAN songs are there and STREISAND IS STREISAND so it’s not an entirely horrible experience. Nice support from MICHAEL CRAWFORD, MARIANNE McANDREW, DANNY LOCKIN, E.J. PEAKER and (the always amazing) TOMMY TUNE.
