In ROB MARSHALL’S Golden Globe nominated musical drama, NINE, veteran actress SOPHIA LOREN plays “mamma,’ the spirit of the lead character’s mother. It’s an all too brief appearance but does afford LOREN a chance to sing “Guarda La Luna.” At the recent press conference for the film, LOREN talked about playing Italian and, even more importantly, being Italian. Listen in below:
NINE opens wide on 12/25.

Sophia Loren has always made me very proud to be “an Italian”.
My parents were born in Tuscany in the 1890’s, came to America as teen-agers. I was born in America and am now 85, ten years older than Sophia Loren, and I quite identify with her description of Italians. She has an enduring beauty of body and spirit.

Sophia has always been my favorite actress…not many have her natural talent and poise . I was born in Italy and as a child I was mesmerized by Sophia’s looks, I used to stare at he picture in the magazine and pretent she was really there.
In reading her Biography, I could really relate to her early life in the small village…not very far from where I lived. Sophia, e la piu bella donna del mondo con un cuore d’oro e un talente insuperabile! I would love to meet her someday.
