On this day in 1982, COLUMBIA PICTURES released GANDHI. Directed by SIR RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH, this epic biopic was one of the highlights of the movie year. The film told the story of MAHATMA GANDHI, the lawyer who became the famed leader of the Indian revolts against the British through his philosophy of non-violent protest. BEN KINGSLEY starred in the titular role with a supporting cast that included CANDICE BERGEN, EDWARD FOX, JOHN GIELGUD, TREVOR HOWARD, JOHN MILLS and MARTIN SHEEN.  GANDHI went onto win eight Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director for SIR ATTENBOROUGHand Best Actor for BEN KINGSLEY.
