Disney’s A Christmas Carol is a retelling of the Charles Dickens classic about a selfish miser who faces the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come who learns the error of his ways as a result. There are no bad versions of this tale and in the hands of Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future), Disney’s A Christmas Carol is an eye-popping adventure in animation.
Jim Carrey has three juicy roles voicing not only Ebenezer Scrooge, but the three ghosts as well, creating distinct personas for each of those characters. Joining Carrey are the voices of Gary Oldman, Cary Elwes, Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins.
Keep all the other versions on your DVD shelf, but don’t miss this newest spectacular.
Imagine a box being delivered to you. Now imagine by pressing a single button you receive a wad of cash - $1 million to be exact. Then also know that at that same moment, someone you don’t know will die. Would you do it? What is the fallout? What are the sinister tricks behind the decision? Those are the questions and dilemmas facing married couple Norma and Arthur Lewis in The Box.
If the premise sounds familiar it’s because The Box is based on the short story, Button, Button by famed fantasy/horror/sci-fi writer Richard Matheson (I Am Legend). The Box has been expanded from the short story to develop it into a full-length feature, but the additions don’t drag the story down. But, they also don’t add anything substantial either. Competent performances from Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella.
After you’ve, 1. sighted 2. collected data 3. made contact with the ETs of the world - the only encounter left is The Fourth Kind…alien abduction.
Milla Jovovich stars as a tightly-wound psychiatrist who videotapes traumatized patients only to discover disturbing evidence of, you guessed it, alien abduction.
This is shot in a documentary style to add credibility to the story and bookended with Jovovich as herself explaining that her character is based on a real person to add that punctuation. It doesn’t.
The Fourth Kind also stars Elias Koetas and Will Patton.
The Men Who Stare at Goats is meant to be lighthearted entertainment and nothing more.
The idea is that the U.S. military intelligence services believes that the next war will be fought with psychic powers including levitating soldiers and eavesdropping on enemies through sort of mind-meld visions. These are the types of roles that George Clooney eats up and he delivers as well as you’d imagine. The flick, however, does not thanks to the slow pacing and characters who sort of stumble-bum through silly subplots.
The Men Who Stare at Goats also stars, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.
Precious has gotten a lot of attention and for good reason. The story revolves around Claireece Precious Jones (Gabourney Gabby Sidibe), an illiterate, overweight and pregnant teen who survives the unimaginable - abuse by her mother, rape by her father.
This may sound familiar, but Precious is far more layered than it appears at first blush. There are moments when Precious is unlikable herself and appears to be a willing participant in her own tragic life - then she grabs our sympathy as her lot in life unfolds.
And the performances are commanding from not only Sidibe, but from both Mariah Carey (sans make-up) and saucy comic, Mo’Nique. All should count on grabbing attention as award season gets into full swing.
Precious also stars Paula Patton, Sheri Shepherd and rocker Lenny Kravitz.
