On this day in 1950, comedian John Candywas born in Toronto, Canada. He studied journalism in college; then, encouraged by his old friend Dan Aykroyd, he auditioned for the Chicago comedy troupe Second City. Candy later won writing Emmys for the troupe’s TV show, SCTV. Candy made his first movie in 1971, Face Off. He starred with Tom Hanks in Splash (1984) and Volunteers (1985), and became an increasingly popular comic actor. Candy, who married in 1979 and had two children, died of a heart attack in 1994 while making a film in Mexico. He was 43 years old.
