On this day in 1970, UNITED ARTISTS released THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. Directed and written by BILLY WILDER, this movie never really got the love it deserved. WILDER’S script was funny but scattered and because of studio imposed cuts the film was pretty much dismissed. The great cast included ROBERT STEPHENS, COLIN BLAKELY, GENEVIEVE PAGE and CHRISTOPHER LEE. Worth searching out on DVD.

I’d love to see the original road show version of this film. It was cut by maybe from a 3 hr.+ running time with an intermission because the studio got cold feet after watching the Julie Andrews road show picture ahead of it, STAR, tank. But the full version did screen a few places before it was pulled for re-editing. Anybody out there have a print - LOL - laying around, or a copy of the road show version script? Get in touch!
