Soupy Sales, who took more than his share of pies in the face, has died.
The comedian, who was born Milton Supman, was a staple on TV with a string of memorable funny moments, including one gag that got him tossed off the air. He told the young viewers of his show to “take some of those green pieces of paper with pictures of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lincoln and Jefferson on them” from their parents’ wallets and send them to him and he would send them a postcard from Puerto Rico.
The bit, unfortunately played too well and though the money was returned, he still was suspended for a week.
Sales also invented a bit of a phenomenon with a dance craze he called the Soupy Shuffle.
He boasted of having been hit in the face with 25,000 pies over the course of his career, but later adjusted that number to roughly 9,000. Still a significant amount of whip over the course of his television reign.
According to reports, Sales had been ill for several years. His former manager, Dave Usher, said the comic entered a Bronx hospice last week. He is survived by his wife, Trudy and his sons, Hunt and Tony.
Soupy Sales was 83 years old.
