On this day in 1926, singer Chuck Berry is born in San Jose, California. Berry learned guitar as a teenager and later moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he played in nightclubs with a band. In 1955, he recorded his first hit song, “Maybellene,” which became one of the first rock-and-roll songs by an African American musician to hit the Top 10. Berry scored a string of hits throughout the 1950s, including “Johnny B. Goode” in 1958.
