zombieland

Who can resist a good zombie flick?  In Zombieland, Columbus and Tallahassee have survived a zombie-infested world by a healthy dose of fear coupled with a AK weapon.  The pair join up with Little Rock and Wichita, who also have creative ways to survive.  Zombieland, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg and Abigail Breslin, combines the icky elements associate with the undead; spattered brains, guts and oodles of blood, with well-placed laughs resulting in a fantastical spin on an overused genre.

Imagine that no one lies.  Then imagine a writer using lies for the first time for, well, personal gain.  That’s the storyline behind The Invention of Lying, which is billed as a romantic-comedy.  Comic genius, Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras) not only co-wrote and co-directed the film, but he also stars as Mark Bellison, the man who begins the bull-sessions.  Look for spot-on performances from Gervais as well as Jennifer Garner, Jonah Hill and Rob Lowe.

capitalismalovestory

Capitalism: A Love Story is Michael Moore’s latest indictment of what he considers to be corporate greed.  But this time, the filmmaker has broadened his outrage to include middle America, the power brokers in Washington D.C., Wall Street, banks and capitalism itself to make his point; that capitalism is bad and has been ever since President Reagan’s era.  Capitalism: A Love Story is ideological and it’s hard to ignore that the system has made Moore more than a small a fortune.  But, never mind about that.  If you’re a Moore fan, you probably enjoy the movie.  If you’re not…you capitalist pigs!…you won’t.

Whip It stars Ellen Page as a texas misfit who deals with her angst after discovering roller derby.  She joins a league, quickly becomes the roller derby queen, Babe Ruthless, but also finds a home with the other members of the team.  This is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut and she does a good job of following the action.  The movie itself is fun with and occasional measure of sap tossed into the mix, particularly when the relationship between Babe Ruthless and her parents is explored.  Still, if you dig chicks kicking serious butt, check it out.
