On this day in 1986, M-G-M released CHARLY. Directed by RALPH NELSON from DANIEL KEYES short story, FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON, this might just be the most subtle sci-fi movie ever made. CLIFF ROBERTSON stars (and won an Oscar) as the title character, a retarded man who, through scientific experiments, becomes a genius and falls in love before reverting back to his original self. Because of ROBERTSON’S brilliant performance, this remains one of the most poignant films ever made.
