On this day in 1964, WALT DISNEY PICTURES released MARY POPPINS. Directed by ROBERT STEVENSON from the book by P.L. TRAVERS and with music by the SHERMAN BROTHERS, this musical combination of animation and live-action almost instantly became the most popular family film of all time. JULIE ANDREWS, DICK VAN DYKE, DAVID TOMLINSON, GLYNIS JOHNS and ED WYNN headlined the adult portion of the cast with KAREN DOTRICE and MATTHEW GARBER as the luckiest kids on Earth.
