On this day in 1969, UNITED ARTISTS released MIDNIGHT COWBOY, the first Oscar winning X-Rated movie. Directed by JOHN SCHLESINGER, the script was by WALDO SALT from the book by JAMES LEE HERLIHY and told the story of a naive male hustler and his sickly homeless friend. Cast included DUSTIN HOFFMAN, JON VOIGHT, BRENDA VACCARO and SYLVIA MILES. The X-Rating imposed by AMPAS was more offensive than anything depicted in the film. A great classic.
