What you see is what you get with a MICHAEL BAY film, and with TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN the director has created his most explosive (literally!), noisiest, and action packed film to date. The legions of BAY naysayers usually deride the filmmaker’s cinematic mission statement: cast several hot young actors, hire credible thespians to carry some of the film’s more dramatic moments, and most importantly, blow things up in a grandiose, video games inspired, and at times, perfunctory fashion. All of those elements are present in TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN, as audiences are reintroduced to the neurotic and charming Sam Witwicky (SHIA LABEOUF), the youth who holds the key to the Autobots finally destroying the Decepticons. MEGAN FOX, a sultry sex symbol who gives SALMA HAYEK a run for the money, is back as Sam’s car nut girlfriend Mikaela, as well as TRANSFORMERS actors JOSH DUHAMEL, TYRESE GIBSON, and JOHN TURTURRO. Obviously the true stars in this project are the machines, and for fans who want to see a healthy share of fights between OPTIMUS PRIME and MEGATRON, they won’t be disappointed with FALLEN. To delve into any semblance of a plot for REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is pointless, as BAY’s film is a visceral exercise meant to jolt and energize the audience (it makes sense that TRANSFORMERS is being developed into a theme park attraction). SHIA LABEOUF, groomed into stardom since the 2003 sleeper hit HOLES, is this generation’s JOHN CUSACK and ROBERT DOWNEY JR, a whipsmart performer loaded with tons of potential. Although he plays second fiddle to all things Transformer, LABEOUF’s innate charisma and moxie shine through, as he brings a level of depth to the Witwicky character. REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is an engaging enough summer movie, just leave your brain at home and since this is a MICHAEL BAY film, make sure to bring some earplugs.
