Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds star in the romantic comedy “The Proposal.” If you’re expecting, based on the title, a romantic scene with Reynolds on bended knee popping the question to Bullock, you’re in for a surprise. The tables are turned in this ‘Devil Wears Prada’ meets ‘Green Card’ meets ‘Northern Exposure’ comedy which is light on romance, but does provide some laughs.
Bullock plays, Margaret Tate, a high-powered, high-maintenance New York book editor and boss to her poor beleaguered assistant Andrew, played by Ryan Reynolds. Margaret is a bosszilla on a rampage terrorizing her cowering staff when she is suddenly faced with deportation because she happens to be a Canadian with an expired visa. In an instant she declares that she’s engaged to the unsuspecting Andrew and that they are truly in love and will be married soon.
Armed with an opportunity to give his boss her long overdue comeuppance, Andrew has some demands that she can’t refuse before he will go along with her plot. And the unlikely couple find themselves heading to Alaska to meet her eccentric family.
Betty White as Andrew’s grandmother proves that age is no barrier to going for and getting the laughs. With Reynolds as the straight man between these two funny ladies, audiences are in for lots of slapstick and goofy humor.
In one scene in particular director Anne Fletcher impresses with her choreography skills when Reynolds and Bullock have a naked mishap that gives the phrase “bumping uglies” a whole new meaning. But, there will be many eyeballs popping when Bullock’s glorious body, more of it than we’ve ever seen, graces the screen.
With a PG-13 rating, “The Proposal” is a docile date movie that may not provide too many surprises but will certainly leave audiences chuckling
