Beautifully shot in black and white with the occasional shock of vibrant color “Tetro” is an artistic achievement from the master himself, Francis Ford Coppola. The film stars the enigmatic though sometimes appalling Vincent Gallo as “Tetro,” a tortured writer hiding from his past and absorbed in his own peculiarities when he gets a surprise visit from a family member which makes him face the past he thought he put behind him.Props all around to newcomer Alden Ehrenreich for his portrayal of Tetro’s unwelcome kin, Bennie.  Many comparisons will be made between Ehrenreich and Leonardo DiCaprio for both his looks and talent.

Set in the bohemian Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca and in sumptuous black and white “Tetro” feels like an art film which truly lives up to that label.

Coppola wrote and directed “Tetro,” which is only his second film in over 10 years and his first original screenplay in over 30.  Those longing to see another “Apocalypse Now” or “Godfather” may be surprised by this private saga of one family’s crosses to bear and secrets to confess fearlessly told through experienced camera-technique, life-infused writing, dance and other artistic touches which are.further embodied by actors who brought their A-game for the maestro of cinema.

“Tetro” is an “NR” black and white film in English and Spanish with some subtitles.  It’s not for everyone, but may provide refuge for a couple of hours to those artistic souls out there wandering around the lobby.
