One could argue that with his prodigious talents, EDDIE MURPHY should take more challenging roles like DREAMGIRLS or the underappreciated Life.  However, the multifaceted entertainer has devoted much of his creative time acting in family fare, and thankfully his latest effort, IMAGINE THAT, is a worthy enough venture.  Evan Danielson  (MURPHY) is a financial analyst at a Denver firm who has little time for his 7-year-old daughter Olivia (Shahidi) or his estranged wife (Nicole Ari Parker). When Olivia’s imaginary friends (they live in her security blanket) give Evan prophetic and accurate financial advice, he is more than happy to spend more quality tie with Olivia.  Shahidi has a natural ease and charm about her, and Murphy ably plays off her precociousness.  SPIDER-MAN 3’s THOMAS HADEN CHURCH chews his share of scenery as Evan’s co-worker and rival, a phony tricks people into believing he’s well versed in Native American culture.  The father-daughter relationship between Murphy and Shahidi never falters, and although IMAGINE THAT is a film of modest ambitions, it should strike an emotional chord with its audience.
