On this day in 1946, COLUMBIA PICTURES released THE JOLSON STORY. Like most musical biopics of the time, THE JOLSON STORY was largely idealized and had little basis in fact. What it did have, however, was great performances in LARRY PARKS, EVELYN KEYES and WILLIAM DEMAREST under the direction of ALFRED E. GREEN. The film won several Academy Awards and was a huge financial success. Of course, that wasn’t enough to keep it’s star (LARRY PARKS) from being targeted (and later blacklisted) by The House Un-American Activities Commission (HUAAC). A brilliant career thwarted by loathsome American bullies.
